By-elections: UP’s Senatorial Candidate Nya Twayen Leads in Nimba

MONROVIA – In one of the most contested elections in Nimba County, electorates went to the polls on April 23, 2024 to elect a senator to replace Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung for the vacant Senate post.

Following the voting, NEC Chairperson, Davidetta Browne Lansanah, yesterday, April 24, 2024 began releasing the first preliminary results from the election.

According to Madam Lansanah, Senatorial Candidate Nya Twayen of the ruling Unity Party (UP), of 167 polling places from a total of 736, the UP candidate has obtained 19, 966 votes, constituting 21.33 percent of the results that have been tallied so far, with Senatorial Candidate Samuel Kogar next in line.

The NEC said, Nya Twayen has accumulated 81.36% of the votes that have been counted so far.

In related news, Independent Representative Candidate Jeremiah Sokan has obtained 2,067 votes, constituting 29.47 percent in the Grand Gedeh County District #1 By-election.

The NEC said that 31 polling places out of the total 46, constituting 67.39 percent have been tallied.

Nimbaians went to the polls on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 to fill the vacancy caused by Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung who was elected on the ticket of the Unity Party (UP) in the 2023 Presidential election.

Meanwhile, electorates of Grand Gedeh County District #1 went to the polls on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 to elect a Representative of the district due to the death of Representative-elect Erol Madison Gwion, who got re-elected two months before his death. The former Representative Gwion died on December 4, 2023, with controversy surrounding his death causing protests in the county.
