Concerned PUL Members Demand Re-run of Controversial 2022 PUL Elections

MONROVIA – Concerned Members of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) say they are watching with eagle eyes recent decision announced by the Peter Quaqua-led Committee to hold a fresh election.

The PUL Concerned Members said they are keenly watching out the Peter Quaqua – led Committee for the full implementation of the Trial Court Ruling into the union electoral dispute.

The Ruling among other things squarely calls for a ‘rerun and thorough cleaning of the PUL – contentious voters’ roll of 2022’.

Earlier in June of this year, the Judge of the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court sitting in Gbarnga, Bong County, Judge J. Boima Kontoe canceled the results of the disputed PUL elections and called for a complete re-run of the Union’s elections between Julius Kanubah and Daniel Nyakonah by October 18, 2024.

The Concerned PUL Members spearheaded by top Liberian Journalists including Y. Solomon W. Watkins, Togar Alexander Bealded, Octavin Toegar Williams and Charles Gbeon, has seriously warned that any attempt by the Quaqua Committee to hold a ‘fresh election’ grossly contravenes the ruling of the Trial Court sitting in Gbarnga, Bong County.

The journalists believe it is a bad precedent, if a fresh election is held on grounds of a matter that engulfed mainly with voter’s roll cleaning up, and not the qualification of candidates who registered to have contested and/or procedural errors for the conduct of the elections.

The journalists say the recent announcement by the Special Committee that it is holding a fresh election as opposed to a re – run, shows no respect for a well – adjudicated process that embargoed the Press Union of Liberia for nearly two – years.

The Concerned PUL Group insists that, if the Peter Quaqua Committee really aims to stabilize the union, it must do nothing less, but to hold a re – run election as mandated by the court.

Further insistence by the PUL Special Committee to keep discussing a fresh election outside of the court ruling, will lead to further disenchantment that could potentially lead to a filing of a new legal redress to the court in no time by anyone who might feel injured by current proceeding”, a statement from the Concerned PUL Members said.

The Concerned Journalists believed that conducting a re – run is the best option to uphold by people of integrity like Mr. Quaqua and members of the Committee.

“We want to remind the Committee that the peace, unity and survival of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), now rest on the shoulders of the Interim Committee and as such, we expect nothing less, but for the committee to do the honorable thing by conducting a re-run without hesitation in serving the best interest of journalists across the country and those elsewhere”, the PUL concerned Members concluded.
