Death Toll Continues To Rise in Totota Gas Tanker Explosion—Two Bong County Medical Officers Launch Appeal for Assistance

As the death toll continues to rise in the aftermath of a gas tanker explosion in lower Bong County, authorities at the Bong County Health Team and the Medical Director of Phebe Hospital have launched a passionate plea for continued support in the County.

The tragic tanker explosion which occurred on Tuesday, December 26, 2023 in Totota resulted in devastating consequences, leaving behind destruction, loss of life, and injuries. 

Among the lives claimed by the fire were a pregnant woman, her daughter, and her husband.

In a press briefing Today, December 28, 2023, at the Phebe Hospital, Dr. Cynthia Blapooh and Dr. Minnie Sankawolo-Ricks said since the accident, there have been donations or assistance from individuals, local authorities, and humanitarian organizations among others.

The duo added that burn takes a long time to heal, so they are appealing for continuous assistance; adding that burns sometimes take one month or six months before they heal.

The two Bong County Medical Officers said they needed medical supplies including drugs, IV fluids, Metro Infusion, IV Tubing, Antibiotic Cannula 18 G/ 20 G, and food for the patients among others.

“We are calling for help for the patients. Any help you can give come to Phebe Hospital with it,” they noted.

Meanwhile, Liberia’s Chief Medical Officer and Deputy Minister of Health Services at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Francis Kateh has confirmed that an additional five (5) deaths have been recorded in Monrovia.

The Liberia Chief Medical Officer in a local radio interview today, December 28, 2023, said there are new reports of deaths, namely, three (3) from JFK Medical Center, ELWA Hospital One (1), and 14 military Hospital One (1) respectively.

He also disclosed that 4 deaths have been reported in the Community but are yet to be investigated.

Yesterday, December 27, 2023, the Liberia Chief Medical Officer informed the media that more than 40 persons were reported dead following the explosion.

According to Dr. Kateh, 83 patients were reported at the Phebe Referral Hospital following the incident, and of that amount, 3 died upon arrival at the Hospital.

He said the death toll might increase following the completion of the ongoing house-to-house contact tracing. By Patrick Stephen Tokpah
