Former President Sirleaf Hails Appointment of Retired Brigadier General Geraldine George as Defense Minister

(Monrovia) – Former Liberian leader Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has hailed the appointment of former Deputy Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia, retired Brigadier General Geraldine George as a milestone in Liberia.

Former President Sirleaf said the appointment of the retired Brigadier General George as the first female Defense Minister of Liberia is a milestone for gender equality.

The former Liberian leader wrote on her official X (formerly Twitter) handle “The recent appointment of retired Brigadier General, Geraldine George, as the first woman to serve as Minister of Defense in #Liberia is a milestone for #genderequality. I hope it will act as a reminder that women are capable of leading across all sectors”.

Madam Sirleaf, a champion of gender quality who served as the 24th president of Liberia from 2006 to 2018 said she hope the appointment will act as a reminder that women are capable of leading across all sectors in Liberia.

Retired Brigadier General became the first Deputy Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia in March 2018 during the leadership of former President George Weah. Prior to her promotion, she served as Acting Commander of the 23rd Infantry Brigade, headquartered at the Edward Binyah Kesselly Barracks (EBK), formerly, the Schiefflin Barracks.

George holds a Master of Arts degree in International Relations from Webster University in the United States and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from the African Methodist Episcopal Zion University College in Liberia’s capital, Monrovia. The retired brigadier-general has also received specialized training in intelligence, counter-terrorism, public sector management and administration of justice from institutions in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Italy.

It can be recalled that On Tuesday, February 13, President Joseph Boakai named retired Brigadier General Geraldine Janet George acting Defense Minister following the resignation of Prince Charles Johnson III, who faced protests from soldiers’ wives over low pay and poor living conditions in military barracks.
