Phebe Hospital Administration Seeks GoL Intervention—As Hospital Faces Numerous Challenges

By Patrick Stephen Tokpah

GBARNGA – The Administration of the Phebe Referral Hospital in Gbarnga, Bong County has launched a heartfelt plea to the government of Joseph N. Boakai for assistance in securing a new Mitsubishi bus with an estimated cost of seventy thousand United States Dollars (US$70,000.00) at the Prestige Motor Corporation; an urgent necessity to ensure the seamless transportation of their dedicated healthcare professionals and the continued provision of quality healthcare services to our communities.
Speaking to newsmen in Gbarnga on yesterday, March 7, 2024, the Medical Director of Phebe Hospital, Dr. Minnie Sankawolo-Ricks said she recognized the financial constraints faced by their supporters, but ‘we implored you to consider this invaluable impact of investing in our institution’s infrastructure, which directly translates to the improved well being of our citizens.’
Dr. Ricks said Phebe Hospital and School of Nursing plays an indispensable role as a referral center for the Government of Liberia, extending vital healthcare services to the underprivileged populace of Bong County and its neighboring regions.
“As a significant recipient of governmental support, we are reaching out to our esteemed stakeholders, including the Government of Liberia, the Ministry of Health, leaders of Bong County, our cherished partners, friends of Phebe Hospital, the Business community, philanthropists, and well-wisher to rally behind our cause,” She added.
“Today, we convene to address pressing challenges that have impacted the effective operation of our institution, hindering our ability to serve the community to the fullest extent. Among these challenges are the lack of essential resources such as a functional bus for transportation, shortages of medical supplies, and shortage of fuel, which are crucial for sustaining our operations as a hospital,” said Dr. Ricks.
According to the Phebe Referral Hospital Medical Director, their paramount concern is the terrible state of their transportation system, particularly the aged bus that has faithfully served the entity since its acquisition in May 2012, adding “thanks to the Government of Liberia for the support.”
However, Dr. Minnie Sankawolo-Ricks said after twelve years of dedicated service, the bus has surpassed its lifespan and now demands excessive maintenance costs, obstructing their ability to efficiently transport their invaluable health workers (Phebe Hospital Staff, C. B. Dunbar Staff, and the Bong County Health Team staff) that are residing between Suakoko and Gbarnga to and from their duty stations.
“We hope that the government of President Joseph N. Boakai and Jeremiah Koung and other well-meaning Liberians will heed to our call for support. Together, let us forge a path toward a brighter, healthier future for all in Liberia,”
The Phebe Hospital Medical Director at the same time extended her deepest gratitude to the Board of Trustees, Administration, and dedicated employees of Phebe Hospital and School of Nursing for their support to the healthcare delivery system of Bong County and Liberia at large.
