President Weah Dedicates Liberia Unification Park, Says Unity Is Key To National Development

President George Weah has officially dedicated the PHP Sports Park now known as the Liberia Unification Park in Monrovia.

Weah, a global soccer legend turned politician was elected President of the West African state Liberia in 2017.

According to Liberia 2017 electoral record, fourteen of the fifteen counties of Liberia massively voted the international football icon in a highly contested presidential election.

Following his inauguration in 2018, Weah broke grounds on August 5,2021 for the construction of a multi-purpose park in the PHP community as part of his flagship sports development program.

The Liberia Unification Park project funded by the United Arab Emirates, through the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), and the Liberian government was supervised by the Minister of State Without Portfolio Trokon Kpui.

In six years, the global soccer legendary Liberian president has constructed and dedicated five notable Recreation/Sports parks, all in Monrovia.

They include, Invincible Sports Park, Clara Town Survivors Sports Park, West Point field, D-Tweh field and the Liberia Unification Park formerly PHP Sports park.

The multi-purpose Liberia Unification park contains full outdoor gym, children’s playground, two football fields, two basketball courts, two volleyball courts, as well as a boardwalk.

Facility of the newly dedicated Park also contain restaurants, a grandstand, souvenir shop, a National Unity Monument, an Administrative building, Car parks, adequate sanitary, security facilities among others.

The project is a dividend of Liberia’s bilateral ties with the UAE and a request made by President George Weah during his visit to the Middle Eastern country in 2019.

Although President Weah announced during the groundbreaking of the project that the project would have been completed within the course of 12 months, the project lasted two years four months before completion.

Previously, during one of his tours of the newly dedicated facility, Weah described lack of infrastructural facilities as major constraints in sports development process across Liberia.

He further mentioned that the facility will be a major boost for young and talented Liberians.

Speaking Saturday December 23 2023 at the dedication program in Monrovia, president Weah challenged Liberians to accept total Unity and reconciliation.

According to the outgoing president, Liberia is divided along so many different lines that must consciously be corrected by every Liberian.

He also called on Liberians to use the multi-purpose park as an unifying tool stating that is named ”Liberia Unification Park” on purpose.

Weah who conceded defeat in the 2023 November 14 presidential runoff ahead of the National Elections Commission official announcement of winner has been amplifying his call for Unity and reconciliation among Liberians.
