President Weah Nominates Samora Wolokollie as New LRA Commissioner General Despite Huge Public Outcry

The President of the Republic of Liberia, His Excellency, President George Manneh Weah has nominated Dr. Samora P. Z. Wolokolie as Commissioner General of the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA).

In a bid to hold unto key positions of state institutions, the Liberian leader on December 30, 2023 nominated Dr. Wolokolie to stir the affairs of the Tax Collection Entity.

It can be recalled that President Weah last week nominated Justice Minister Musa F. Dean to replace Associate Justice Joseph N. Nagbe on the Supreme Court bench which received condemnation by Nimba County Senator Prince Y. Johnson.

The Nimba County lawmaker said, the nomination by President Weah was “constitutional but untimely due to the fact that he (President Weah) has less than three weeks in office”.

The Nimba County Senator in an interview with Journalists last week called on colleagues of the Senate not to confirm the nominations of President Weah, saying “it is not in the best interest of the State”.

The nomination made by the Liberian leader late last year is subject to confirmation by the Honorable Liberian Senate.

Article 54 of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia mandates the President to nominate public officials with the consent of the Senate.

Political actors are questioning the motive of President Weah nominations of strong men of the CDC-led Government to hold unto key positions with his exist from the Executive Mansion less than a month away.

If confirmed, Dr. Wolokolie will replace the late Thomas Doe-Nah who occupied the position since 2020, and passed last month in India following a period of illness.

Dr. Wolokolie is the current Deputy Minister of Finance for Development Planning; a position he occupies since the inception of CDC administration in 2018.
