PUL Recognizes Journalist Jonah Mulbah’s Heroic Coverage of Totota Tanker Explosion

Liberian Journalist Jonah Mulbah has been hailed by the Press Union of Liberia in the aftermath of the Tuesday, December 26, 2023 fuel tanker explosion that occurred on Mulbah Hill, Totota, Bong County.
In a release, the PUL said it was proud of the bravery of the Radio Totota and Spotlight TV Liberia employee for covering the scene when the fuel tanker had fallen off the road while trying to avoid a speeding vehicle that was headed from the opposite direction.
The video which has been trending on social media across Liberia, has been an issue of public discussion since the tragedy occurred late last year.
In the video, Journalist Jonah Mulbah was commentating on the accident while some residents of the area began siphoning petrol from the tanker as others looked on before suddenly the tanker exploded which cost the lost of lives of many Liberians in that part of the country.
The release from the PUL said, “The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) proudly acknowledges the exceptional journalism of Jonah Mulbah, a local reporter renowned for his courageous coverage of the devastating explosion involving a petroleum tanker in Totota, Bong County.
Tragically, this incident claimed the lives of over fifty individuals, with numerous others currently receiving medical care in hospitals located in Gbarnga and Monrovia. Jonah Mulbah, employed by Radio Totota and Spotlight TV Liberia, demonstrated unparalleled bravery by documenting the initial chaos following the tanker crash, which was transporting gasoline to nearby Nimba County.
Journalist Mulbah’s coverage not only captured the unfolding events but also the subsequent efforts of law enforcement to prevent people from accessing the tanker, culminating in the heartbreaking explosion. The videos, showcasing the harrowing human suffering, have proven instrumental in aiding first responders to identify the deceased and those injured.
In his unwavering dedication to the story, Journalist Jonah Mulbah has persistently pursued updates on the conditions of the burn victims in hospitals in Gbarnga and Monrovia. Furthermore, he has diligently reported on the escalating number of casualties resulting from the petroleum tanker explosion.
